Book Information

In this young adult novel debut, the story of a girl too smart for her own good who, after one tragic night, decides to reject the popular life in exchange for one of solitude.

Perfect Parker Fadley isn't so perfect anymore. She's quit the cheerleading squad, she's dumped her perfect boyfriend, and she's failing school. Her parents are on a constant suicide watch and her counselors think she's playing games…but what they don't know, the real reason for this whole mess, isn't something she can say out loud. It isn't even something she can say to herself. A horrible thing has happened and it just might be her fault. If she can just remove herself from everybody--be totally alone--then everything will be okay...The problem is, nobody will let her.

Cracked Up To Be gives you Parker, her world, her friends, straight up, no chaser. You won't forget her.” —Kathe Koja author of Kissing The Bee

I was really surprised by all the positive reviews of this. I've been reading tons of young adult this summer and this one really fell below my expectations. There were certain things the author was doing with her writing that just held me back. Parker was too unlikable as a protagonist. I would have liked to seen more character depth than a huge ball of angst. It drove me crazy how often Parker's name, along with many other characters' names, was used in dialogue. I don't use a person's name when talking to them a million times. The ending felt too resolute. The usage of present tense to tell a flashback also didn't work to help the novel. If there is a sequel, I would probably not be reading it.

I loved the main character I found her quite witty, the whole plot and everything was fantastic I felt like I could really relate. This is actually my favourite book now!

The writing was great ... The story wasn't. The opening was never fully explained, only parts of it. The ending left you wanting more explanation. It was an okay quick read. The author has a positive career ahead of her.

Fantastic book from an author who shells our characters that you literally feel. Parker Fadley, straight A student, popular, etc. Comes back to school with an apathetic attitude. She quit cheerleading, broke up with her jock bf...but still waters run deep. I also recommend Some Girls Are by Summers as well.
